Kelly White

I am a math certified teacher for elementary through high school Geometry in Arizona. I have experience teaching both elementary & middle school.

Before becoming a teacher, I had a career in graphic design — and I love using visual arts to teach math! I'm extremely passionate about helping students understand math in new ways.

Rebecca Muller

I'm a certified special education mathematics teacher for grades K-12. My love of math comes from searching for the “why” and being able to demonstrate the “how."

Currently, I teach Geometry and Algebra II, but I believe that success in all higher math comes from a strong foundation in basic skills.

Ayana Williams

My name is Ayana, and I am a Navy vet. turned elementary school teacher! I always wanted to be an educator and after completing my 20 navy years, I joyously finished college and did exactly that!

I am currently a 4th grade classroom/virtual teacher, but I also have experience with grades 1, 3, and 5.

4th Grade Math

Topics Include:

  1. Factors and Multiples - Students learn about factors and multiples and apply their understanding of the area of rectangles. Students determine if a number between 1 and 100 is prime or composite.

  2. Fraction Equivalence and Comparison - Students deepen their knowledge of fractions. They explore the size of fractions, write equivalent fractions, and compare and order fractions with the denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100.

  3. Extending Operations to Fractions - Students think about how fractions can be composed (put together) and decomposed (taken apart). They also learn about fraction operations: multiplying fractions and whole numbers, adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, and adding tenths and hundredths.

  4. From Hundredths to Hundred-Thousands - Students learn to express small and large numbers, from hundredths to hundred-thousands. They learn to write tenths and hundredths using decimal notation and to work with whole numbers within 1 million.

  5. Multiplicative Comparison and Measurement - Students make sense of multiplication as a way to compare quantities. They use this understanding to convert units of measurement and solve problems about measurement.

  6. Multiplying and Dividing Multi-digit Numbers - Students deepen their understanding of multiplication and division and expand their ability to perform these operations on multi-digit numbers.

  7. Angles and Angle Measurement - Students learn a new language for describing parts of geometric figures and practice identifying and drawing them. They also learn to talk about angles, measure their size, and draw angles of different measurements.

  8. Properties of Two-dimensional Shapes - Students classify triangles and quadrilaterals based on the attributes of their sides and angles. They also learn about lines of symmetry in two-dimensional figures. Students then use these attributes of figures to solve geometric problems, including those about perimeter and area.

5th Grade Math

Topics Include:

  1. Finding Volume - Students find the volume of rectangular prisms and figures composed of two prisms.

  2. Fractions as Quotients and Fraction Multiplication - Students solve problems involving division of whole numbers with answers that are fractions (which could be in the form of mixed numbers). They develop an understanding of fractions as the division of the numerator by the denominator. They then solve problems that involve the multiplication of a whole number by a fraction or mixed number.

  3. Multiplying and Dividing Fractions - Students use area concepts to represent and solve problems involving the multiplication of two fractions, and generalize that when they multiply two fractions, they need to multiply the two numerators and the two denominators to find their product. They also reason about the relationship between multiplication and division to divide a whole number by a unit fraction and a unit fraction by a whole number.

  4. Wrapping up Multiplication & Division with Multi-Digit Numbers - Students multiply and divide multi-digit whole numbers using place value understanding, properties of operations, and the relationship between multiplication and division. They use the standard algorithm to multiply multi-digit whole numbers and partial quotients algorithms to divide whole numbers up to four digits by two digits. They then apply these skills as they solve problems involving volume.

  5. Place Value Patterns and Decimal Operations - Students use place value understanding to round, compare, order, add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals.

  6. More Decimal & Fraction Operations - Students solve multi-step problems involving measurement conversions, line plots, and fraction operations, including addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators. They also explain patterns when multiplying and dividing by powers of 10. Students interpret multiplication as scaling by comparing products with factors.

  7. Shapes on the Coordinate Plane - Students are introduced to the structure of the coordinate grid, and the convention and notation of coordinates to name points. They classify triangles and quadrilaterals.

6th Grade Math

Topics Include:

  1. Area and Surface Area - Students learn to find areas of polygons by decomposing, rearranging, and composing shapes. They learn to understand and use the terms “base” and “height,” and find areas of parallelograms and triangles. Students approximate areas of non-polygonal regions by polygonal regions.

  2. Introducing Ratios - Students learn to understand and use the terms “ratio,” “rate,” “equivalent ratios,” “per,” “at this rate,” “constant speed,” and “constant rate,” and to recognize when two ratios are or are not equivalent. They represent ratios as expressions, and represent equivalent ratios with double number line diagrams, tape diagrams, and tables.

  3. Unit Rate and Percentages - Students learn to understand and use the terms “unit rate,” “speed,” “pace,” “percent,” and “percentage,” and recognize that equivalent ratios have equal unit rates. They represent percentages with tables, tape diagrams, and double number line diagrams, and as expressions.

  4. Dividing Fractions - Students examine how the relative sizes of numerator and denominator affect the size of their quotient when numerator or denominator (or both) is a fraction. They solve problems involving lengths and areas of figures with fractional side lengths and extend the formula for the volume of a right rectangular prism to prisms with fractional edge lengths and use it to solve problems. They use tape diagrams, equations, and expressions to represent situations.

  5. Arithmetic and Base Ten - Students compute sums, differences, products, and quotients of multi-digit whole numbers and decimals, using efficient algorithms. They use calculations with whole numbers and decimals to solve problems set in real-world contexts.

  6. Expressions and Equations - Students work with expressions that have positive whole-number exponents and whole-number, fraction, or variable bases, using properties of exponents strategically to evaluate these expressions, given a value for the variable. They represent collections of equivalent ratios as equations and use and make connections between tables, graphs, and linear equations that represent the same relationships.

  7. Rational Numbers - Students plot points with signed rational number coordinates on the number line, and recognize and use the connection between relative position of two points on the number line and inequalities involving the coordinates of the points. They understand and use absolute value notation, and graph inequalities in one variable on number line diagrams. They solve simple inequalities  interpret solutions of inequalities in contexts. Students plot pairs of signed number coordinates in the plane, and use coordinates to calculate horizontal and vertical distances between two points.

  8. Data Sets and Distributions - Students learn about populations and study variables associated with a population. They make and interpret histograms, bar graphs, tables of frequencies, and box plots. They work with measures of center and measures of variability. They interpret measurements of center and variability in contexts.
